”What does labor want? We want more schoolhouses and less jails; more books and less arsenals; more learning and less vice; more leisure and less greed; more justice and less revenge; in fact, more of the opportunities to cultivate our better natures, to make manhood more noble…”
-Samuel Gompers

You Must be Out of Your Mind - The Magnetic Fields (Realism) The Magnetic Fields has been my favorite band for seven months now. Not only because 69 Love Songs (there really are 69 songs) is the best break up album ever written, but because the lyrics are so blunt and honest. things like “You can’t go round just saying stuff because its pretty, I no longer drink enough to think you’re witty”. Stephin Merrit takes a stab at things like drinking and sleeping alone, being disappointed by someone you had high hopes for, or realizing that the person you are madly in love with is insane, even admitting that love makes you insane yourself. Forget the fact that the group blends the lines between gender and drops comments about Camus, the way they sing about relationships is brilliant, along with all those other things. Their sarcastic and brash perspective is refreshing and will probably never grow old to me. Let’s be honest, relationships suck and sometimes its nice to hear things from the perspective of a bald, middle aged genius and his equally awkward companions. Because truly, who else would be able to do justice to the bizarre phenomenon that is relationships besides Stephin Merrit?
Wish He was You by Best Coast Bethany Cosentino, an LA native, is a noteworthy contender in the lo-fi surf community. It has been said that her project, “best coast”, sprung from her desire to move back to california while in New York City. Best Coast stays true to Californian roots and that 60’s surf sound. Well done Bethany Cosentino, whenever i feel out of place in Oregon, its nice to listen to a sound that feels like home. Im always waking up with something in my head
its 6am and im someone elses bed
